Gauss published Disquisitiones Arithmeticae in 1801, at the age of 24. Today it is regarded as one of the most influential mathematical works ever written, and one which laid the foundations for modern number theory. Among many other things, the book contains a clear presentation of Gauss’ method of modular arithmetic, and the first proof of the law of quadratic reciprocity (first conjectured by Euler and Legendre).
