I know that G. Polya realised that it is not just enough to know heuristics to become a good problem solver. You need something else. It doesn't appear that he made a lot of progress on that but he has done a great job of putting it down in paper as to what he thinks about the psychology of problem|About the Author|George Polya (1887-1985) was Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Stanford University
“Solving problems”, writes Polya, “is a practical art, like swimming, or skiing, or playing the piano: You can learn it only by imitation and practice. This book cannot offer you a magic key that opens all the doors and solves all the problems, but it offers you good examples for imitation and many opportunities for practice: If you wish to learn swimming you have to go into the water and if you wish to become a problem solver you have to solve problems...
